In line with established tradition, the annual Easter Festival closes on 9 May with a free concert by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra on Poklonnaya Hill under the baton of Valery Gergiev. But this year, the sixty-fifth anniversary of victory in the Second World War, the festivities in Moscow will continue. On 10 May the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra will be performing a concert featuring works by Russian composers at the Estonian National Opera in Tallinn. Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony will be conducted by Valery Gergiev, while Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony will be performed under the baton of Eri Klas, a highly acclaimed conductor whose honorary titles include that of People’s Artist of the USSR. On the eve of the concert, maestro Klas arrived in St Petersburg and allowed us to attend his rehearsal.
